The Final Mile

The Final Mile program was established by the Veterans Affairs (VA) and CVMA® FL 20-10 to honor veterans who pass away without any known next of kin or family to claim them. This initiative ensures these veterans receive a dignified burial and a proper farewell, recognizing their service and sacrifice to our Nation.

The program has since been adopted by the Robert J. Dole VA and is proudly supported by CVMA® KS 21-3, who carry the torch in Kansas to ensure that NO VETERAN IS FORGOTTEN. It brings together a coalition of dedicated partners—including the Robert J. Dole VA, CVMA® KS 21-3, American Legion Riders (ALR), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Riders, VA Police, local and state law enforcement, and community organizations—to stand in solemn honor of those who served.

Together, we ride the Final Mile, ensuring that even in death, our veterans are remembered, respected, and never alone.

Ceremonies and Processions: The program also organizes ceremonies and processions for unclaimed veterans, bringing together community members, VA staff, and veteran organizations to pay their respects. These events serve as a final salute, honoring the lives and sacrifices of those who served—even when no family remains to do so.

Each ceremony is a solemn reminder that every veteran matters, and that their service will be remembered with dignity, gratitude, and reverence.

Motorcycle Escorts: The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association® (CVMA®) plays a significant role in the Final Mile program, working alongside the American Legion Riders (ALR), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Riders, and other military organizations to provide motorcycle escorts for unclaimed veterans on their journey to their final resting place at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.

This solemn escort is more than a ride—it’s a powerful gesture of respect and honor, ensuring that these veterans receive the recognition they deserve for their service and sacrifice. Each mile traveled is a tribute, a promise that they are not forgotten.
